In AP Literature, we will certainly be reading a lot of texts. Let's make sure we read them effectively. This specific book isn't about a story, it's about all stories. For instance, ANYTIME that characters in any story eat together, it's a version of Communion. These characters are building a community of trust. That's as true for the castaway boys eating cooked pig in Lord of the Flies as it is for Harry Potter & friends as they sit down to their first meal in Hogwart's dining hall. A thorough reading of this text will teach you the tips & tricks you need to understand tropes (patterns) that show up regularly in reading great books.
ASSIGNMENT: Create 3-part Google Slides Presentation. NOTE: Do NOT mention the play "Othello" in this Presentation FOR ANY REASON. Part 1: (1-2 Slides) Make 1-2 slides about yourself. I must contain picture or video of you, an interesting fact, and at least 2 subjects you'd like to talk about (for example a band and a hobby). Part 2: (2 Slides) Pick 2 chapters from our Summer Reading book 'How to Read Literature Like a Professor.' Prove that each of those chapters is true. To prove that the chapter is true, you must accurately summarize the chapter then give additional examples that come from literature and films NOT mentioned by the author, Thomas Foster. Part 3: (1 Slide) Pick 1 chapter from our Summer Reading book 'How to Read Literature Like a Professor.' Prove that it is false. To prove that the chapter is false, you must accurately summarize the chapter then give counter-examples that disprove the author's claim. |
Othello is Shakespeare's play about forbidden love, a racist father, a power-hungry trickster, a jealous lover, and a tragedy that ensues when these pieces all come together. As you read, think deeply about the messages Shakespeare conveys through the play as a whole. You should also think about how Shakespeare creates these themes in his usage of literary elements such as plot, setting, characters, imagery, irony, and symbolism.
ASSIGNMENT: I. Read the entire play (if possible, try to see it performed). II. Apply the text How to Read Literature Like a Professor to Shakespeare's "Othello." Specifically, you must write a single page examining which scenes in the play exemplify concepts from the book. |
